Landscape Fossilized

2004

‘Landscape Fossilized’ is a body of work that reflects on the processes of archaeological drawing. The project was developed in collaboration with Gretta Byrne, archaeologist from Ceide Fields Megalithic site and museum in Ballycasle, Co.Mayo, Ireland.

The series of drawings, paintings and vitreous enamels draws parallels between the processes of archaeological excavation, probing, drawing and recording, and the process that the artist engages in whilst drawing, painting, layering, revealing and obscuring the image, eventually ‘excavating’ it out of the surface of the canvas.

‘Landscape Fossilized’ project was exhibited at Ceide Fields Visitor Centre in Ballycasle, Co.Mayo (2003), Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, Co.Mayo and Cross Gallery, Dublin (2004), Patrick Heide Art Projects London and Frankfurt (2004-2005) and Apothiki Gallery, Cao Chang Di Art Zone, Beijing (2005)
